INSIGHTS
Jefferson Regional serves more than 200,000 patients at its namesake hospital and 19 clinics across 11 Southeast Arkansas counties. The organization has been an Altera client for more than a decade and has leveraged the Sunrise™ electronic health record (EHR) since the early days of the partnership.
As a participant in the Meaningful Use and Promoting Interoperability programs, Jefferson Regional needed a solution to meet the evolving reporting requirements set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and to track electronic clinical quality measures (ECQMs) for its clinical sites.
When the organization searched for a solution to meet regulatory requirements under CMS, Altera Clinical Performance Management emerged as a natural contender.
Quality measurement, simplified
Standardized documentation made required regulatory reporting easy
From insights to action
Enabled teams to mine vast volumes of clinical data to improve clinical performance
Enhanced user experience
Flexible tools helped providers and other users seamlessly configure and support real workflows
Quality reporting made easy
Clinical Performance Management is a Business Intelligence (BI) solution that empowers healthcare organizations to mine clinical data and transform it into actionable information. The rules engines and advanced data visualization and reporting tools provide access to the vast clinical data collected in the EHR. This enables clients to drive operational and clinical transformation by improving clinical performance and patient outcomes. Dashboards provide healthcare leaders with powerful access to performance information to facilitate quality improvement across the enterprise.
Jefferson Regional ultimately selected Clinical Performance Management not only because of its integration with Sunrise, but because it determined the solution would be the most effective tool for all its reporting needs.
"The Clinical Performance Management tool is very flexible and allows the user to adapt configuration to meet actual workflows," said Mike Wisely, Director of Quality Analytics at Jefferson Regional. "Reporting has proven to be easy as the documentation is so standardized."
Some of Jefferson Regional's physicians are members of an accountable care organization (ACO) that has required the use of the CMS web interface for quality reporting. However, beginning in 2022, all eligible physicians at Jefferson Regional will use Clinical Performance Management for quality reporting when the CMS interface is retired.
"The Clinical Performance Management tool is very flexible and allows the user to adapt configuration to meet actual workflows. Reporting has proven to be easy as the documentation is so standardized…Clinical Performance Management includes a ton of pre-built content, supports easy customization and expansion, full data cube access, and intelligent rules and alerts to make the analytics actionable directly within the EHR."

Driving better care with powerful insights
Jefferson Regional has a commitment to improve care through analytics and data-driven decision-making. To this end, the organization leverages a massive data lake to perform its own in-house research and development of intelligent quality measures. It also makes significant investments in intuitive, effective products that integrate analytical insights into the daily workflows of care providers.
"Clinical Performance Management includes a ton of pre-built content, supports easy customization and expansion, full data cube access, and intelligent rules and alerts to make the analytics actionable directly within the EHR," said Wisely.
With Clinical Performance Management, providers at Jefferson Regional can see a singlepage view to explore a patient record-without navigating to a separate application or module-as well as high-level metrics of the patient, with the ability to hover over each item for more descriptive detail. In turn, providers can focus on delivering excellent patient care rather than navigating disparate, duplicative data sources.
Adapting to market and client needs
"I have been a primary user of the system from the beginning and have seen the product evolve and become more feature-rich. The product is extremely stable, easy to use and easy to maintain," said Wisely. And when challenges arise for clients, the Altera team is ready to step in. "The team that supports this product knows it inside and out and are always so helpful when needed, but we rarely need help because the system just does its job," Wisely said. "We are happy Clinical Performance Management users and look forward to what is coming down the road with the product!"
