Sunrise Goes Live at Flinders Medical Centre

14 September 2021 – Allscripts’ Sunrise has gone live at the Flinders Medical Centre, the second largest hospital and health facility in South Australia after the Royal Adelaide Hospital. This is part of a multi-stage rollout at Flinders that began with the replacement of the previous patient administration system in March, followed by the hospital’s outpatient areas in the second phase. This third phase implemented in July enables clinical activation across the entire hospital including inpatient areas, the Emergency Department and remaining outpatient areas. The final stage that is to be implemented will see the activation of maternity and neonatal areas in the Women’s and Children’s division of the hospital.

Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) provides an extensive range of medical services for communities in the southern metropolitan area of Adelaide, approximately 15 kilometres south of the city. The hospital is co-located with the Flinders University School of Medicine and Flinders Private Hospital, which supports the public hospital through the provision of contracted services, presenting some unique challenges for configuration and workflows in the implementation planning process.

Allscripts’ general manager for Australia and New Zealand, Todd Haebich, said that steady progress is being made in the delivery of SA Health’s goal – to establish a connected community of health across the state supported by a contemporary electronic medical record.

“The roll out at Flinders Medical Centre is a significant step forward in the ambitious rollout of a statewide integrated PAS and EMR in South Australia and particularly meaningful considering how large and busy the hospital and associated sites are, combined with the additional pressures of the Covid pandemic,” Mr Haebich said.

“Now the same system is in use across four South Australian Local Health Networks in metropolitan and regional areas, South Australians will benefit from improved consistency in administrative and clinical processes as they move between sites.”

FMC is regarded as one of Australia’s finest public teaching hospitals and a centre for research excellence. More than 5,000 skilled staff work at FMC and it is one of two major trauma centres in the state with around-the-clock emergency retrieval service bringing patients to the hospital by road or helicopter.

In November 2019, Sunrise went live in the Mt Gambier Hospital in regional South Australia.
