Digital systems underpinning NHS transformation: The role of electronic patient records

URL Copied!

The recently published NHS England Operational Planning Guidance outlines a path to tackling waiting lists, improving patient outcomes and driving innovation across the health service.

However, 2025 will be a challenging year for the NHS. To meet ambitious targets, the health service must harness technology that enhances efficiency, supports integration and enables better collaboration across systems.

At Altera Digital Health, we are fully committed to supporting trusts through this transformation with our robust and proven electronic patient record (EPR) system, delivering integrated Clinical and Administrative capabilities, patient flow platform and interoperable solutions. Our fast, flexible and cost-effective approach helps integrated care systems (ICSs) join up information, streamline processes and enhance collaboration at scale. This will be the key to unlocking significant productivity and efficiency gains.

Building a digital foundation for NHS transformation

The Elective Reform Plan, announced in January, sets out how the NHS aims to meet the 18-week referral-to-treatment target by March 2029. A key element of this plan is improving patient experience, increasing convenience and empowering people to manage their own care. But to achieve this vision, NHS organisations must have the right digital foundations in place.

At the core of this transformation is delivering seamless access to patient information. A unified, accessible patient record is essential for linking services across GP practices, Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs) and hospital trusts. By integrating real-time, actionable data directly into workflows, clinicians can make informed decisions more quickly—reducing inefficiencies and improving patient outcomes.

Gaining a complete patient picture

To truly transform healthcare, ICSs need interoperable solutions that bridge gaps between systems, enable real-time data sharing, and support better decision-making. Altera’s EPR-agnostic dbMotion Connect™ UK Solution achieves this by integrating patient data across regions. It also provides:

  • Access to actionable patient data, regardless of where it originated to deliver convergence.
  • Integrated data embedded directly within clinician workflows, reducing delays.
  • A streamlined patient experience, avoiding repeated questions and tests.
  • Cost-effective, modular solutions that reduce operational costs while improving efficiencies.
  • Better user experiences for clinicians and health and care teams.
  • Enhanced collaboration across clinical teams, supporting improved care outcomes.
