Better, faster, stronger: How Paragon is leveraging AI internally
In healthcare IT, speed matters. Every week spent on manual processes or legacy constraints is a week our clients wait for innovations that could improve patient care and operational efficiency. That’s why the Paragon® team is using AI internally to accelerate our development, modernize the Paragon Denali platform faster and deliver client value more rapidly than ever before.
Here’s how we’re doing it—and what it means for you.
Reimagining our entire platform: From ten years to three
The most ambitious transformation we’re undertaking is the complete modernization of our application suite. Paragon currently runs on a commercial toolset that’s served us well but limits our ability to deliver modern capabilities our clients need. We were facing a 10-year timeline and expensive third-party contracts to modernize just a handful of applications.
With AI, we’ll change that equation fundamentally.
As demonstrated at HCTC 2025, we’ve started rewriting a portion of our core applications in more modern development platforms, continuing with the containerized architecture. Our AI systems will pull specifications in from the design platform we leverage and architectural documentation from our internal knowledge bases to then generate modern, standardized code at a pace that would have been impossible just six years ago.
But this isn’t just about updating technology for technology’s sake. This modernization unlocks something our clients have been asking for: true openness and interoperability. The new architecture includes APIs and other applications that allow third-party software to interact safely with our electronic health record (EHR). As natural language interfaces become standard in healthcare software, our platform will be ready to deliver on that functionality. Imagine clinicians conversing with the EHR to retrieve lab results and place orders or back-office staff querying AR status and processing payments—all without clicking through screens.
Accelerating quality through intelligent testing
Speed means nothing without quality. That’s why we’re now using AI to write automated test cases and, critically, to triage test failures. Previously, limited automation coverage and three or four days of manual triage prevented us from running comprehensive tests regularly. Today, we’ve achieved nearly 90% automated test coverage for all new functionality and run our full test suite nightly.
Speed means nothing without quality.
The impact? We’re catching and resolving bugs during the development cycle rather than discovering them weeks later during regression testing. This shift-left approach means more stable releases and faster time-to-value for client-requested features.
Compressing timelines across the board
AI acceleration shows up throughout our development lifecycle. When new regulatory requirements emerge, we use AI to perform a gap analysis against our existing documentation. A process that previously took multiple months of product manager effort now completes in days, giving us a critical head start on compliance.
We now also translate user interface (UI) drawings into front-end code in minutes instead of days. This allows us to create and update applications more quickly.
What this means for you
Every hour AI saves us internally is an hour we can invest in solving your challenges. Every week we compress from our development cycle is a week sooner you get new capabilities. By embracing AI as a force multiplier for our engineering organization, we’re building the modern, open, intelligent platform healthcare deserves—and we’re building it at a pace that matches the urgency of your needs.
