A strategic transformation in healthcare delivery

St. Luke’s Medical Center (SLMC), one of the Philippines’ leading healthcare institutions, has consistently pursued innovation to strengthen the quality, safety and efficiency of patient care.

As clinical operations became increasingly complex, SLMC recognised the need to further integrate its systems, streamline workflows, and strengthen access to reliable clinical information. This led to a comprehensive digital transformative initiative, with the enterprise electronic health record (EHR) becoming a key component of the organisation’s modernization strategy.

The transformation was driven by SLMC’s vision of creating a more connected, efficient, and patient-centered healthcare environment, supported by technology that could adapt to the needs of its clinicians, patients and operations.

The opportunity: Creating a more connected care environment

Prior to the transformation, several processes remained dependent on manual documentation and information across separate systems. These created opportunities to improve:

  • Consistency and completeness of clinical documentation.
  • Access to a more unified view of patient information.
  • Coordination across clinical departments.
  • Medication ordering and safety processes.
  • Timelines of information available for clinical and operational decision-making.

For an organisation operating at SLMC’s scale, addressing these areas was essential to supporting safe, efficient and coordinated care.

A deliberate approach to digital transformation

In 2018, SLMC undertook a comprehensive evaluation of three EHR systems against its clinical and operational requirements.

The selected solution, together with supporting third-party applications, met SLMC’s requirements for:

  • Clinical and operational functionality.
  • Integration with existing and planned ancillary systems.
  • Scalability for future growth.
  • Flexibility to support SLMC’s local workflows while incorporating global best practices.

The decision formed part of a broader, long-term strategy to strengthen SLMC’s digital capabilities and establish a foundation for continued innovation.

“At St. Luke’s Medical Center, we view digital transformation as a key enabler of better healthcare. The implementation of our EHR platform has allowed clinicians to collaborate more efficiently, streamline processes and keep patient-centered care at the forefront, while ensuring the secure management of health records.”

Chief Information Technology Officer of St. Luke’s Medical Center

Implementation across two major hospitals

The transformation was implemented in phases across SLMC’s two major campuses:

  • Luke’s Medical Center – Global City, April 2022.
  • Luke’s Medical Center – Quezon City, April 2024.

The scale of the initiative required extensive coordination across clinical, operational, technical and administrative stakeholders. Both implementations were completed with minimal disruption to clinical services, reflecting the organisation’s strong internal collaboration and commitment to a successful transition.

Transforming the way care is delivered

Since implementation, SLMC has strengthened several aspects of its clinical and operational environment:

1. More accessible clinical information: Clinicians now have real-time access to comprehensive patient records, supporting more informed clinical decisions and greater continuity of care.

2. More efficient clinical workflows: Integration with medical devices enables the automatic capture of vital signs and other clinical data, reducing manual documentation and opportunities for error.

3. Stronger medication safety: Clinical decision support capabilities incorporated into medication management provide additional safeguards throughout the prescribing and medication use process.

4. Greater interoperability: The EHR environment connects with key in-house and third-party systems, including the Laboratory Information System, Radiology Information System and Cardiovascular Information System. This facilitates more seamless movement of information across the organisation.

Digitalisation at scale

A significant milestone in SLMC’s transformation has been the conversion of clinical documentation from paper to digital formats.

To date, SLMC has transitioned:

  • 291 clinicians’ notes
  • 112 waivers and consent forms
  • 136 diagnostic result documents

That’s a total of 539 clinical documents that moved from paper-based to digital workflows.

Beyond reducing paperwork, the initiative has helped to establish more consistent processes and improve the availability of information across the care environment.

Building a foundation for the future

SLMC’s digital transformation extends beyond the implementation of an EHR. It represents an ongoing organisation commitment to using technology, data and redesigned workflows to continually improve healthcare delivery.

The transformation provides SLMC with a strong foundation to:

  • Support data-informed decision making.
  • Improve clinical and operational workflows.
  • Strengthen patient safety.
  • Respond to evolving regulatory and clinical requirements.
  • Continue advancing its digital health strategy.

As noted by Alexander S. Tined, Chief Information Technology Officer of St. Luke’s Medical Center, digital transformation is viewed as a key enabler of better healthcare, enabling clinicians to collaborate more efficiently, streamline processes and maintain

patient-centered care while securely managing health information.

Setting a benchmark for digital healthcare in the Philippine

SLMC’s digital health journey demonstrates how a large, complex healthcare organisation can use technology as an enabler of meaningful organisation change.

By combining strong institutional leadership, clinical engagement, process transformation and digital capabilities, SLMC continues to build a healthcare environment that is more connected, data-informed, efficient and future-ready.

The EHR is an important component of this transformation, but the larger achievement is SLMC’s ability to translate digital innovation into improvements in how care is delivered.
